Sustainability Gets the Greenlight

Comcast NBCUniversal’s Road to Carbon Neutral

Comcast NBCUniversal set a company-wide goal of being carbon neutral by 2035 for both Scope 1 emissions, which are direct emissions, and Scope 2, which are indirect emissions from purchased energy. To achieve this goal, the company has focused on three distinct sectors – theme parks, workplaces (Studio Lot), and production. While these efforts span the globe, including Epic Universe, the first LEED-Platinum certified theme park in the U.S., major efforts are underway at Universal City, every day.

Theme Parks

In addition to the continued conversion of the World-Famous Studio Tour trams to electric ride vehicles, Universal Studios Hollywood has continued to green its operations with efforts including:

  • Continuing to convert to LED lighting fixtures throughout the park, front and back-of-house, and guest parking.
  • Donating leftover meals from on-site restaurants and production catering to local non-profits, and collecting food waste for composting, which provides local farmers with nutrient-rich soil.
  • Reducing single-use plastics with compostable and reusable service ware.
